Deciding to enter therapy can be difficult, but it can also be empowering and an effective way out of life’s impasses. My approach to psychotherapy is rooted in helping my clients to clarify, understand, and ultimately change the problems that prevent them from reaching their full potential. This way of working involves an exploration of the difficulties that are obvious to the client, but also challenges the client to consider factors or conflicts beyond their awareness. I aim to create a safe and supportive environment, with well-established goals and active collaboration. Although my primary orientation is psychodynamic in nature, I readily use cognitive and behavioral techniques when indicated.
In addition to treating a range of difficulties, including mood disorders, anxiety disorders, and relationship problems, I also have specialized training in the diagnosis and treatment of personality disorders and working with individuals who struggle with ongoing patterns of self-defeating behavior or chronic experiences of emptiness or unhappiness.
I have also conducted research focused on mood disorders, anxiety disorders, eating disorders, and personality disorders, which has been published in peer-reviewed journals and presented at national conferences. It is important to me to use empirically-supported forms of psychotherapy so that my clients are being treated with the most effective psychotherapeutic approaches.
I tailor my approaches to meet specific client needs. Just as no two clients are alike, no two treatments are alike. I readily use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to address acute or shorter-term problems, such as the emergence of panic attacks or episodic depression. However, for longer-term struggles, I lean towards exploratory psychodynamic work that explores attachment relationships, early childhood experiences, and relationship patterns in order to effect change.
After a thorough evaluation, I will offer a recommendation of what approach to therapy might be most useful and, along with the client, establish goals for treatment. Please don’t hesitate to call with questions or to schedule a consultation.
I am not a member of any insurance panels, however I am considered an out-of-network provider. This means that those with out-of-network benefits can often receive reimbursement through their insurance company. I gladly and promptly provide receipts for those who wish to use their out-of-network benefits. If you have questions about my fees or whether your out-of-network insurance benefits can be used, please do not hesitate to ask.
